Optimise your website for SEO

This article explains some basic best practises for SEO optimisation.

Written by Cristiana Ghinea

There are several areas on the platform which you should focus on to help with SEO on your website and give your pages a better chance of appearing in search engine results.

Below is a list of the areas you should focus on.

Meta titles

Your meta titles should be a unique, accurate and concise description of your page content. The content you add to 'Meta title' (under the SEO dropdown when creating/editing a post) will pull through onto search engine results as the meta title. This is the title users will click to access your page. If 'Meta title' is blank, the page title will pull through instead.

Try to keep your page title character length to approximately 65 characters to ensure it displays properly on search engine results.

Meta descriptions

When you create any page on the platform, you should add a summary of the page in the 'Meta description' box (under the SEO dropdown below the content section). This summary will display beneath the meta title for your page on search engine results and act as the "pitch" for the page and encourage users to click through to your page. This should be unique, engaging, accurate and concise.

If the 'Meta description' is blank, the search engines will either pull through your 'Summary' or create their own from your page content. We recommend creating your own, relevant meta description.

Try to keep your meta description character length between roughly 110-155 characters to ensure it displays properly on search engine results.

Headers and sub-headers

It is important to break up longer pages with headers and sub-headers, both for readability and to help with SEO, as search engines tend to reward websites for superior usability.

By adding headers in properly, you will help search engines pick up these key sections on your pages.

When putting together your headers, remember to think about keywords and key phrases that your audiences are likely to be searching for.

Internal links

One indicator which search engines use to determine the quality and relevance of your website is how long visitors remain on the website once they've clicked through to a page.

Linking your visitors from a page to other relevant areas on your website will determine the next step they take and ensure their session on your website is longer.

All pages on your website are there for a reason and should encourage visitors to take a particular step.

You can highlight the main call to action on a page by using the CTA button style.

Alternative text on images

Adding alternative text to images is first and foremost a principle of web accessibility but, as mentioned above, search engines will reward your website for superior usability.

Make sure you add alternative text to the images you use either as banner images or as images within your copy.

Category meta descriptions

If you are using categories to put together listing pages on your website, you should ensure you've added a meta description to your categories.

This will display beneath the meta title for your listing page on search engine results so should be kept to between roughly 110-155 characters to ensure it displays properly on search engine results.

Homepage meta title and meta description

You can also edit the meta title and meta description for your homepage.

Just like on other pages, the meta title and meta description will act as the "pitch" for your website and encourage users to click through. These should be unique, engaging, accurate and concise.

Try to keep the meta title to approximately 65 characters and include your charity name.

📌 Note: Try to keep the meta description between roughly 110-155 characters to ensure it displays properly on search engine results.

SEO Is More Than Technical Optimisation

Although this is a list of technical features you can control to help improve your SEO, please bear in mind that good SEO is a much broader topic than this. To get it right you need to ensure you are consistently creating good quality, relevant content which your audiences will want to read. For some general advice on SEO, this article is a good starting point.
